Getting a reservation (the hard part)

Reservations open at pros8.hnl.info exactly 48 hours before your visit, at 7:00 AM Hawaii time. They typically sell out in under 10 minutes during peak season. Set an alarm, log in at 6:55 AM, and refresh.

If you miss out, walk-up entry is sometimes available after 12 PM when reserved guests don't show โ€” line up by 11:30 AM and bring cash.

The mandatory orientation video

Every first-time visitor (in the past 12 months) must watch a 9-minute conservation video before entering the bay. It plays continuously at the theater near the parking lot.

What you'll see underwater

Hanauma's reef hosts more than 450 species of fish, including bright yellow tang, parrotfish, the state fish (humuhumunukunukuapua'a), and frequently green sea turtles. Visibility is best in the morning before the trade winds pick up.

What to bring

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (mineral, oxybenzone-free โ€” required by Hawaii law)
  • Mask, snorkel, and fins (rentals available on site for ~$20)
  • Rash guard for sun protection over the reef
  • Water shoes โ€” the entry beach has coral fragments
  • Cash for parking ($3) and walk-up entry if needed
